Inbreeding and Selection for Litter Size in a Prolific Mouse Strain
نویسنده
چکیده
As part of a series of studies investigating the genetic basis of prolificacy in the non-inbred QS strain of mice, a line has been selected for increased average litter size over the first 5 litters, and seven sublines have been created by full-sib inbreeding with selection for litter size. Six generations of selection have resulted in an increase of average litter size from 16.0 to 18.1, indicating the existence of substantial genetic variation for “lifetime” reproductive performance. Nine generations of inbreeding with selection have produced sublines with average litter sizes ranging from 9.8 to 16.1. Future experiments with these lines should provide valuable information on the genetic basis of prolificacy in the QS strain.

Genetic analysis of a strain of mice plateaued for litter size.
A strain of mice (S1) was successfully selected for large litter size for 31 generations, increasing the mean by 4.2 young per litter. After generation 31, there was no further progress and it was concluded that a selection plateau had been reached. Realized heritability decreased during the course of the experiment from 0.16+/-0.06 for the first 15 generations to 0.00+/-0.03 for generations 30...
متن کاملComparison of Introgression and Synthetic Breed Strategies for Litter Size Trait in Sheep using Computer Simulation
The objective of this study was to compare introgression and synthetic breed strategies for litter size trait improvement in sheep using computer simulation. For this purpose, a trait with heritability of 0.1, consisting of two chromosomes was simulated. On chromosome 1, a single QTL as the major gene was created that accounted for 40% of the total genetic variance. The effect of favorable and ...
متن کاملAncestral inbreeding only minimally affects inbreeding depression in mammalian populations.
Inbreeding depression can be reduced, or purged, by selection against deleterious alleles. This prediction is the basis of the recommendation that captive wildlife populations suffering from inbreeding depression be intentionally bred from healthy inbred animals. Yet data on the effectiveness of purging inbreeding depression are few. In this study I present and use two different regression mode...
متن کاملScreening for FecGH Mutation of Growth Differentiation Factor 9 Gene in Iranian Ghezel Sheep Population
Background Ghezel sheep are highly prolific and one of the local sheep breeds in Iran and Turkey. Growth differentiation factor-9 (GDF9) gene has been found to be essential for growth and differentiation of early ovarian follicles. Novel mutations in GDF9 have been associated with increased ovulation rates and high litter sizes in heterozygous carriers. Therefore, fecundity gene for GDF9 (FecGH...

Genetic reference populations in model organisms are critical resources for systems genetic analysis of disease related phenotypes. The breeding history of these inbred panels may influence detectable allelic and phenotypic diversity. The existing panel of common inbred strains reflects historical selection biases, and existing recombinant inbred panels have low allelic diversity. All such popu...
